Insight: This portrait was a personal drawing that I created as a way to test out a new set of pencils and colors. I often use browns and grays in my work, so the bright oranges and yellows of this mare was an enjoyable change.

As always, I began this piece with the eyes. This allows me to bring life and energy into the animal from the beginning. When that life is captured it becomes as if I am revealing the animal rather than attempting to construct it from nothing.
